I have been working on an older dell server machine, and i have pulled an optical drive from another computer for a new wipe and OS install. I have the discs. Unfortunatly, i have lost the damned jumper at the back of the optical drive. it needs to be set to slave, and i was removing it, when it fell down behind the motherboard, psu, or somewhere else. Can i use something in place of the jumper? like a wire?

Sure, you can use a wire or paperclip or whatever, or pull one from another drive, or use anohter ide cable and put it on the second channel and let it be a master or cable select.
You could also try cable select between the prim and sec, if the optical drive's "no jumper" mode is cs

also, does there have to be a bios setting t match it?
i have tried master, and cs with the jumper. i look at the bios, and its set to slave. so does the jumper setting have to match the bios setting? and can i change the bios setting somehow?
