My AMD Phenom II Quadcore runs too hot

While I play games such as Borderlands 2 or Bioshock Infinite, my CPU gets up to about 70 degrees Celcius (my fans run at about 6800 rpm), and often my computer crashes because of it (while I'm playing the screen goesblack, the tower goes quiet, but the LED lights on my case stay lit).

I just wanted to ask what I can do if anything to decrease the temperature of my CPU while gaming in order to prevent my computer from crashing like this. I considered attempting to increase the fan speed, but I don't know if that's reasonable or if it will even help at all.

Any help or answers will be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your support.

If you using a stock cooler, which I believe you are using, then that may be pert of or the problem.
But first things first. Take off your heatsink and replace the TIM or thermal paste. Then reseat the heatsink and check
your temps. The temps you should worry about are your core temps . On hardware monitor they would be the Package temps. For your cpu your core temps should be no higher than 61.1 degrees Celsius. On hardware monitor the cpu temp is the socket temp. keep it @ 70 Degrees Celsius or below. Even if your temps settle down after you clean and reseat your heatsink I still recommend an aftermarket heatsink. It will be less noisey under loads an will even run cooler which will be a bonus.

Alright thanks guys. I just realized that I left my thermal paste at my parents home which I won't be going to for a couple of weeks so I won't be able to try this stuff for a little while.
