Hey guys,

So I've been getting into some online shooters and I would like a gaming mouse for the purpose of having extra buttons on the mouse for some aid with quick reflex maneuvers. I've currently got my eye on the Mad Catz R.A.T. 3 here: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1682661800...

But I've got a serious question. I do not want to invest in a specialized mousepad for the mouse, I want a mouse that is perfectly fine with using my couch cushion as a surface. I did research and found conflicting data, one source said Optical is fine on every surface, while another said it's not, and laser is better for any surface.

Can someone with experience in the matter point me in the right direction? Optical or Laser for the couch cushion surface?

I just tried both of my optical mouses on a black leather couch pad. They both worked perfectly well.

I used to have a laser mouse. Unfortunately I have never tried it on the couch, but I can tell you that it did not work on my black table, it required a differently colored mouse mat... So if your couch is a dark color, laser might not work based on my experience.

Optical also tends to be preferred anyway.

My wife kept abusing my mouse pads so I ended up just using my mouse directly on the desk top which is dark cherry wood with a laquer finish. I can now swing that sicker for days and not worry about re-centering the mouse on the pad. Much preferable now. It's an optical mouse.

You might get conflicting reports here as well. I've used my optical mounts on my jeans, shorts, fabrics, etc and there's not been a problem. Optical is considered the more stable of the two technologies, but I can't comment on laser as I've never owned one.
