My computer (windows 7) shut down today sometime while I was at work. I asked if the power went out, but my roommate said no. When I turned it on it got to windows and I launched google chrome and then it shut down again, no blue screen or error message.

Then I turned it on again and ran MS security essentials followed by Malware bytes, but they didn't find anything wrong. So i downloaded Kaspersky antivirus and then the computer shut down while it was updating. Again no error message or bluescreen. Also for some reason when the computer was on the date of windows was set back to 2007 and the resolution on my monitor changed which I thought was odd.

Now when I turn on the computer, the power light comes on and the startup sound whirs, but then the sound dies. The computer does not reach the BIOS screen or anything, it's just on without getting anywhere. The monitor remains blank and there's no sound of any fans coming from the computer, but the power light remains on.

I smelled the power supply to see if it burned out, but it smelled normal. I asked my brother and he thinks it might have something to do with the motherboard. Any help would be appreciated.

have you checked the heatsink to see if it is dirty? usually the system shutdown upon reaching a certain temperature. if the heat sink is clogged with dirty clean it.
