Hello,

I have been having trouble with my HP Pavilion XE783 Computer connecting to the internet through Ethernet wire and could really use some advice. The machine operates with Windows ME and has a new old stock 3-com USB to Ethernet adapter which was installed 1 year ago. This was then connected to a 50 ft Ethernet wire. This system worked but over time the connection grew more intermittent until it stopped. I have now temporarily connected the computer to a 6 ft wire, with which the internet works. When reconnected to the original 50ft wire, there is no internet connection. Both wires have been tested with other computers and worked perfectly with those machines. The Pavilion and adapter are properly configured and all drivers are as up to date as possible. Any advice for how to possibly correct this problem is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help and have a great day.

So a 6-ft works while the once-working 50-footer doesn't? I presume you've swapped 'ends' of the 50-footer, yes?

You write that the cables have been tested satisfactorily on other computers... what about parts that haven't been swapped out?

Can you yank out the USB-Ethernet port while the machine's off, and start up the machine without it. Don't sign into Windows - do a SHUTDOWN at that point.

Then, plug the USB-Ethernet back into the machine and do a full power-up/sign-in and see if there's a difference. (I am thinking of "accumulated line noise" - a Gaussian Effect, in other words.) And you might try a different USB port, by the way, although this may cause set-up problems on that older computer which is looking for...

On a side note where spending money might occur:

A mail-order place like MONOPRICE can appear to have very cheap prices, but you'll pay shipping on this. Sometimes, I find these "one cable purchases" to be less expensive locally, including sales tax.

Of course, "if it's not the cable, then it's got to be the USB-Ethernet device" is the 2nd part of the equation. The 3rd part is the USB plug. I've suspected that I've 'killed' a computer's USB port thru static-y discharges - plugging and unplugging while power or signals are present.

But in those cases, they stop working entirely, not intermittent or sometimes-working sometimes-not.
