The fairer comparison would be between the R9 290x and GTX 780, which are both similarly priced on Newegg right now. The nod would go to the 290x.

Between the R9 290 and GTX 780 though, the nod goes to the 780.

The R9 290 is a great card for sure, especially at its price point. There is also the added benefit of Mantle support for games like Battlefield 4.

Anandtech found the R9 290 to average out to slightly faster than the GTX 780 in their benchmarks. And its still $100 cheaper than the 780. Pretty easy choice, in my opinion.
