NZXT H440 case very warm, need some cooling advice

Ok I have been having some issues keeping my H440 cool, although my cpu (4790k) idles at around the mid 30’s and gpu (MSI 780 Ti) at around 30 the concern is more how warm the case feels and smells when I play games, my 780ti can hit 80c under load (which I gather isn’t that uncommon) but it really heats up the rest of my computer, I can smell the heat being dispersed from the case around the rear exhaust as well as in the vents on the roof, and when I open up the side panel it’s just lots of really warm air.

My setup is as follows…

Corsair H100i cpu cooler with 2 x Corsair SP120mm Red LED as exhaust in the top of the case
Corsair AF140mm Red LED exhaust fan at the rear (should I have gone with SP120?)
2 x stock NZXT FN V2 120mm fans as intakes in the front

Some notes…

The bottom stock case fan in the front doesn’t work and never has, not sure why but everything seems to be connected as it should be.

The rear exhaust and the front intakes are on a fan hub, powered by a molex connector, I am able to connect this whichever way round I want (bit weird?) one way resulting in lower rpm (my current setup) and the other way resulting in higher rpm but a lot more noise.

My H100i fans are connect to CPU_FAN via a splitter and are set in the mobo to run at a low rpm.

My graphics card is also set to run at a manual fan speed, ideally no higher than 42 (anything higher and I start to hear it) but hitting 80-83c at that fan speed doesn’t seem to be too bad (was testing using Just Cause 2, every setting max and no Vsync).

Now I know I have a lot of my fans set to a low speed setting and i have more exhausts than intakes so I realise the problem could be im not in taking enough air to keep the air in my system cooler thus when it exhausts out i can smell masses of heat, but my aim is to find that balance between quiet and cool, I honestly don’t think I could have my fans running noisy regardless of the cooling benefits.

One idea to fix the issues was to replace the rear AF140 with an SP120 or I could replace the 3 front intake fans (including the broken one) with 3 high quality AF120’s so I’d be getting an extra intake making it 3x exhausts and 3x intakes and ill be improving the existing airflow which would hopefully run quieter than my stocks do on the max 12v (connecting the molex the correct way) or possibly buy a fan controller to find somewhere between the two.

I did briefly switch my H100i fans to intakes so i had 4 intakes and 1 exhaust, it made the heat more bearable but i realise the ideal setup is to have roof fans as exhausts, or what would people think about me putting them back as intakes and just replacing the exhaust fan with an SP140?

Long post I know but I really could do with some advice on how to cool my system and keep it quiet, It doesn't seem normal that I can smell so much heat and that the inside of the computer is like an oven, it’s the last thing I need to solve before I can actually enjoy my new build.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

Do you think i need to swap the Corsair AF140 rear exhaust for an SP140?

I was thinking of replacing the front 3 stock fans with 3 of these

Unless you can recommend me better fans?

Ok great, i would be better going with AF's over SP's for the front intake though?

I was debating getting 2 x AF140 quiet editions instead of 3 x AF120s, less noise and more airflow?

I'm actually now thinking of getting 3 x SP120 instead, i saw an article on this website
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2137246/airflow-nzxt-h440.html

It says that the static pressure fans are good for this case and because i have 2 static pressure fans that i didn't use from my Corsair H100i i'm going to try those out tonight to test my temps and if it improves things ill get 3 new ones and if not i'll stick with the AF's.

Hello, I'm also looking to buy that case and for the last weeks I have been doing a ton of research on how I will cool it.

Firstly yes, from what I gather 3xSP fans is the best solution for intake and you should leave the AF140 at the back!

As far as top exhaust I am not sure and I am wondering, have you made the changes yet? What changes did you make and how did it translate to performance?

Thank you!

That is why i asked :

"As far as top exhaust I am not sure and I am wondering, have you made the changes yet? What changes did you make and how did it translate to performance?"

Since 2 months have passed I thought you might have some conclusions.

Thank you

My setup now has the original exhausts at the rear and in the roof, i have since added 3 Noctua SP fans to the front of the case but i didn't really notice a difference, i also bought bracket for the GPU so i could attach a water cooler to it, it's called the NZXT Kraken G10, this along with a Corsair H55 liquid cooler means my gpu temps never exceed 60c playing the top level games.

That said, i can still feel that my case is warm and i can smell that it gets warmer but ive been assured that this is normal as my temps aren't getting too high, it's simply the way it goes with a case with poor airflow.

It still bothers me but i'm trying to get used to it, i think the main culprit is the H100i rad in the roof which will obviously heat up as it cools the cpu when i'm gaming, then the gpu will heat up which will add to the hot air going through the rad, intake vs exhaust doesn't seem to make a difference.

I may try and put the H100i in push/pull (if it can fit) in the future but for now i'm going to try and live with it.
