Hey guys, so I've got an i5 2550k 4.4GHz (4.8GHz Turbo Boost, apparently, though I highly doubt it actually clocks to that due to voltage), and was looking to upgrade preferably to an i7.

My FPS is sufficient in most games, though I do drop below 60fps sometimes, and was hoping a new CPU would raise the frames somewhat.

Can you recommend any CPU's that would offer a decent performance boost? I'd probably need a new motherboard too, so if you could recommend one as well that would be highly appreciated. I was looking at perhaps an i7 4790k, are there any better out there? Looking to overclock to at least 4.4GHz

More about : upgrade 2550k advice appreciated

For gaming only a i5 4690k will be good enough but if you can afford it, a 4790k is very good too assuming that hyoer threading will be utilised i future games

Would I see much of a performance increase going to an i5 4690k from an i5 2550k? Cheers.

maybe a increase in fps in cpu intensive games and faster rendering/editing etc, same for i7

Thanks for the link. What do the numbers mean? I presume the higher the better.

If you can afford it get a i7 4790k cause it'll last at least 5-6 years

Yeah, but how much improved performance am I like to see? I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds of my frame rate isn't likely to improve.

if you want to increase fps you need to be upgrading gpu, not cpu, you'll only be seeing a small fps increase iwth cpu

Your best options for an i7 if you upgraded now are either the i7-4790K or i7-5820K. If anything, the -4790K might have marginally better performance in poorly-threaded workloads. Its "worth it" to upgrade now, but I'm not entirely convinced that your processor is the most likely cause of your framerate dips to start with so you may or may not see an improvement there.

Personally if I had an i5-2550K and was looking for an upgrade, I'd probably hang on a few more months for Broadwell. Even if its just another boring 5-10% IPC boost, that still justifies the upgrade a little bit more.

I have a GTX 780ti, but comparing my benchmark to others, I feel I should be getting higher FPS

Unless playing heavily cpu bound games like MMOs.

It would be good if you could post your gpu as well as the software (games) you're running.

Hmm, then get a i5 4690k, that should keep your cpu up to date, only if you render etc will you want a i7 really, and it may just be the cpu cottlenecking thr gpu mybe, so upgrade to a 4690k, you shiuld see a increase in fps

Since it appears you are an overclocker, I would just get an i7 3770k. Making the jump to Haswell just isn't worth it. Your board should support it with a bios update.
