I currently have an i7 3770k cpu overclocked and it does great for gaming it couldn't be any better. I was wondering if the Intel Xeon E3-1245 V2 would give me equal performance in gaming but greater performance in programs like 3ds Max, Inventor, just regular auto cad and similar programs.

More about : xeon heavy gaming heavy cad work

No, that Xeon is slower than that i7.

Not worth it, since you already have an overclocked i7 3770k.

What makes you say that

What makes you say that

Check the link that Y0GI posted, the Xeon has a lower stock clockspeed and it can't even be overclocked so it has no chance of beating your overclocked i7-3770k.

Well I want it to be equal in gaming and better at rendering then my current CPU

Then you would need a totally new platform. The E3 Xeons will not perform any better than what you have now. They are nothing more than i7's with ECC support, and most lack IGP. 1150 Haswell is only 5-10% better than ivy. If you want better rendering, you should be looking at Haswell-E when it is released.

Then get an i7-5960X/5930k/5820k with an X99 board and overclock it.

How high is your budget?

well im assuming i can sell my motherboard and CPU and get, what would you say? $175-200 for the pair?? If so my budget for a new board and cpu is around $600

5820k is $400 (cheapest one), you can get a bundle of an X99 motherboard and the the 5820k for ~$650-700 at microcenter. However, you need DDR4 ram on top of that, the total will come out to be $900-1100, depending on which ram you choose. I would just stick with the 3770k.

the new chips arent backwards compatible with DDR3?

No, the X99 motherboards don't support DDR3 Ram. So if you want to go with the new Haswell-E cores then you need to buy a new CPU/Motherboard/and DDR4 Ram.

so whats the best choice i have without going haswell e

Sticking with the 3770k, since the Xeon wouldn't be worth it.

Xeon chips are created for prolonged heavy stressload, they're capable of running project for weeks or even months, that would trade off some of the performance compared to the regular i7.
So you won't be having any performance increase at all.
