I have a netgear wndr3400v3 and it only reaches about 30-50 feet. I live in an apartment complex so there are a thousand different wireless networks, and my router is on the clearest channel. Will a high gain antenna work? What should I do to strengthen the signal? Is there a range extender that doesn't weaken the signal?

You need to scan the airwaves to see what your dealing with. I use inSSIDer but there is other software as well as apps for mobile devices that can scan. Apartment complex's are very difficult to deal with as far as Wifi goes because of all the signals. This is especially true on the 2.4Ghz band. If you can use the 5Ghz band that would be better as it has more channels available, but without scanning the airwaves, you can't see what channels would be best to use. A high gain antenna will most likely make things worse as it will pull in more interference. Is your problem weak signal or low throughput? How many walls are between where you are measuring signal from and your router? Are you currently using 2.4 or 5ghz?

There are about seven walls before reaching my living room. I have 2.4 and 5ghz, but when I am in the living room I use the 2.4. The signal is strong near the router, but the signal is weak in the living room. I've checked all of the channels and I am on one of the best channels right now. I also changed the 5ghz channel. Thank you for your help.
