Memory for Asus P5N-E SLI Motherboard

Greetings, All.

I am trying to upgrade my son's pc, and it has an Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard as its foundation.

I know that this board can handle a maximum 4GB of RAM, and there is presently 3GB installed.

I also know that I need a GDDR2 memory DIMM, but I have a couple of questions:

Does each DIMM need to be the same?

If not, can anyone suggest a 1GB DIMM module to fill my empty slot?

Thanks in advance for your time!

EDIT: Can I junk the 3 1GB DIMMS, and perhaps get 2 2GB DIMMS instead?

1) The MB can handle the maxi. 8GB with 64-bit OS. 4GB is for the 32bit OS. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5NE_SLI/specifications/
2) You are better to get the same timing RAM, you can install the cpu z http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html and to see what is timing for those RAM. Because the RAM may or may not compatible each other when you add the new RAM with different timing.
3) You can get the 2x2GB but it will be more expensive, but it is the best way to upgrade the RAM.

Because I don't know the RAM timing so that I can't recommend one for you now. If you have the 32bit OS then forget about the 4GB, just use the 3GB instead, because the RAM can be use only 3.5GB under 32bit OS.

Wrong, it can handle up to 8 GB RAM in total (2 GB in each of the four slots).

The board supports dual-channel memory architecture so you should buy matching pairs of RAM modules to take advantage of that for better performance.
