A complete anti-virus and anti-malware scan are in order. I would suggest using Malwarebytes (see below) for the malware scan.

The free version is fine for most users.

What anti-virus application are you using?

You may also want to consider resetting your system to its factory configuration as well (depending on the severity of infection).

Do you mean that Windows doesn't start and gives an error or Malwarebytes gives an error?

Another option you be to download the AVG Rescue CD and burn the ISO to a CD. Boot from the CD and follow the prompts to conduct a full scan of your system.

Remove everything it finds. Don't waste your time simply quarantining items.

Once Malwarebytes cleans your rig and you restart. You need to update and do a full scan with your anti-virus as well.

I actually use Microsoft Security Essentials on my Windows based rigs at home and have had zero issues. Are you looking for a paid or free solution?
