Current Setup

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965
MOBO: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X
GPU: ASUS Radeon R9 280
RAM: G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1600
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650
HDD: Samsung EVO 250gb SSD

I mostly play WoW and League of Legends, I might start playing more system intense games but I'm not sure.

Would I benefit greatly from upgrading to FX-8350 and ASRock 990FX Extreme3 or would I be better off overclocking my 965 and saving the 300$. Assume cooling is not an issue and I can get a great deal out of my Phenom II

More about : stick amd phenom 965 upgrade 8350

Also considering upgrading my board only, I'm not sure if my current board would play well with overclocking my 965. How would my current board vs the other I posted effect my 965 overclocking

You would not benefit much if you only play Wow and League of Legends. Games only utilize at most 4 cores and being that the 8350 is an 8 core you would have 4 cores not doing anything while you play games. However, if you plan on doing multi threaded operations or have many applications open then you would see some improvement. You also have a lot of OC'ing head room with the 8350. So really if you want a great 4 core processor Intel is the way to go. If you want to OC and think you might end up doing more than WoW and such then go for the 8350. It's a great CPU to learn how to OC on too btw. That's the one I learned on. And if you wanted to maximize your OC'ing abilities, go for the 990FX chipset. I used the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 in combo with my 8350 and had great results.

Better save up the money until you can a decent intel build. For gaming, something like an I5 4440 and a h87/97 motherboard.

If I was going to upgrade to intel it would be a 4690 i5, I'm actually more interested in not spending money vs spending it if I can avoid it

The 4690 is not worth the $20 more it costs to get one. You are wasting money going to FX. Even an i3 4150 would be better than your current chip, in WoW. Blizzard games are not very AMD friendly. The 965 is just a bit faster than a 750k clock for clock, and probably about even with an FX 4300. That is pretty low end, by today's standards. Your CPU was great back in the day, but it is starting to show its age.

Is it purely for gaming ,or ary you going to run some CPU intensive applications like CAD or Sound editing ? Are you going to use some thing like Blender which is hugely dependent on Open CL ? Are you love to play CPU intensive games like 4X strategy ,Simulator, Grand Strategy,Football Manager etc etc ?
If your answer for all of these questions are yes then you should upgrade to FX 8320/FX 8350. If not then stick with your current CPU.

So 4690k, 4440, 4590, or something else? in realistic price vs performance. In my situation will I even notice the difference. I don't do anything other than WoW and League realistically

In LoL, you probably will not notice, as almost anything modern can run that well. WoW you probably will. Your CPU is definitely a bottleneck here. If you want to overclock, the 4690k with a z97 extreme4. If not, go with an i5 4590 with an H97 pro4 or Fatal1ty H97 Killer, if you want M.2 slot and Killer Lan. I would probably choose the 4590 and killer combo for just pure gaming. 4590 has been priced close to the 4440 lately.

Id rather be able to overclock so I think maybe a 4670k would be nice.

Why don't you pick up 4670k ? For extra $15 you will be getting unlocked CPU & around 10% performance gain over 4440 .

What's the difference between the H97 performance and H97 killer in reference to the Fatal1ty board

And is it worth 25$ increase on the Killer board.

The performance is 75$ only difference seems to be Intel LAN instead of Killer and no M.2 which I don't need. Is killer lan over intel worth 25$

My personal pic would be the Killer board for the M.2 slot for future SSD upgrade. If not worried about it, then the pro4 is fine.

Well hey, I appreciate it guys. I've always been a fan of the AMD budget style. Although it appears they are in a sour place right now and Intel's prices are dropped a bit. I guess Intel is the way to slide right now

You might want to rethink this as AMD dropped 8350's price to somewhere below $140 today. And games that support 8 cores are appearing & more will come up at any given time.

I knew the price drop was coming, I already ordered the 4590 and fatal1ty. Also snagged 2 Asus VE247H 23.6" monitors for 119.99 each. Newegg sale

I can already tell you that the i5 will be better for WoW. My FX 8320, @ FX 8350 speeds, with an HD 5850, doesn't play WoW as well as my i5 2400 @ 3.5ghz and an HD 5850. Blizzard fails at optimization, so it really isn' AMD's fault. It is just how it is.

Very nice. You will have a solid rig for sure. Very close in performance to my own system. You will be able to run ultra, with just a couple settings turned down here and there. I tend to run with shadows on low, SSAO disabled, and water set to I believe fair. The last one mainly so I could easily see the BOA weapons that were under water in Pandaria. Makes it easier to see mobs too. Only thing you will have any struggle with is Ordos fight. That drops me into the teens on a regular basis.
