so my problem is that my 290x will only run bf4 on about 45 fps, i know it is playable but all these benchmarks show 90 fps. why is my card not as fast as theires.

More about : 290x fps bf4

What are the rest of your specs? Have you installed the latest drivers for your GPU?

It depends on your CPU and GPU config mostly. BF4 is mostly CPU intensive and so if you have a processor that's not as good as the ones you've seen then that's probably the reason.

i have the latest driver and my cpu is an i5 2300 so that can't be too bad. for the memory i have 6 gb 1333

but it's not just bf4. all the games i try in ultra settings on 1080p have some lag, not at all like the benchmarks i've seen

What is your GPU/CPU/RAM usage when idle and under load?
What are your CPU/GPU temps under load?

cpu temps are never above 55 C , i will check the usage now

Let me guess, you have a reference model, right?

Those things can run incredibly hot. How high are your room temps? It's possible that your GPU is throttling because it's overheating, and that's why it has performance issues.

i do have a reference model yes, but i let the fan be incredibly loud allready, it doesn't work

cpu is 80%, ram is 3 of 6 gb
the gpu does throttle to 840mhz, but even at 1065mhz when it is still cold it won't be much faster

Is that 80% CPU usage in BF4 or when idling?
m

September 2, 2014 10:44:12 AM

80% in bf4, about the fan speed, i run at 45%. you don't want to know how loud that is, i accidently set it to 85 ones and it sounded like a jet tearing down my brain, so if you don't mind i'm not turning it up any further

What happens to your fps if you use DirectX?

but why is it 80 euro when you can get a msi model for only 30 euros more, it almost seems that a watercooler would be cheaper

No, you can swap it in settings menu of BF4.

Quote:
When the game is fully loaded you will need to open the options screen of BF4. Then you will open the “video” settings and there you will find an entry called
“Graphics API” on the right side of the screen. You simply have to change from DirectX to Mantle and that is all you need to do!

Do this except change from Mantle to DirectX.

I don't know what the temps and airflow are like inside of and around your case, but having the same reference model 290x it hardly ever elevates over 82c when in the most demanding games I set the fan to 85% overclocked at 1150 mhz and 1600 mhz, +100 in core voltage and +50 in power limit with Afterburner. If it already isn't, make sure that switch on the GPU is set in the position *away* from the video output ports on the card as there's both an uber and silent mode, with the silent mode throttling the card at a lower preset of combined factors than in uber mode. Also, even in uber mode I used to get variable downclocks when overclocked (Powertune) which used to piss me off, by first overclocking in Afterburner and then opening CCC to additionally set the power limit to +50 to then minimize it to background processes, I'm able to maintain consistent clock speeds without having to worry about variables or downclocking.

I think 95 c is the max operating temp before throttling for this card so if you're at 94 c "no matter what," then yeah, throttling is probably the issue that will have to be resolved with implementing some type of water cooling, whether CPU or GPU (likely more efficient solution), into your PC. Other than that, could just be a bad card.

Upload them to a site like TinyPic or imgur, and then post the links here.

but amd says it is ment to be at 95 C all the time so that the fan doesn't have to get too loud etc. but i don't understand how you are able to put up with you're fan at 85%. that. is. insanly. loud. i cannot put it higher than 45 without waking my neighbours up. i don't that difference in our cards, i will try the uber mode switch now and upload the pics.

Your GPU seems to be running at PCI-E 1.1 x1, while it should be running at PCI-E 3.0 x16.
What motherboard do you have?

You really should do that during a stress test such as Furmark or MSI Kombustor, as alt-tabbing from Watch Dogs to adjust settings will reduce the GPU load and therefore its temperature as well. It may have no problem with 1070 MHz with a game in the background, but alt-tab back into the game and it may throttle again.

95°C may be AMD's quoted maximum for the card, but that just means its components are rated for operation at that temperature. Its definitely throttling at that temp, and so much heat inside your case could be raising the temperature of the rest of your hardware as well. I would be aiming for no more than about 85 at the high end, if it were me.

I don't really have a fix for you, because this is a known issue since launch and the 290X probably shouldn't be sold with a reference cooler in the first place. I'd probably try replacing the thermal compound and trying to maximize the airflow inside the case the best you can.
