I am going to be building a gaming/htpc build for the first time and while doing my research i've come across many upcoming developments in technology. There's the new DDR4 RAM coming then along with it the new Intel Haswell chips and to support this new motherboards. After doing a bit more research I found out about whats going to be storing my whole media library i became confused. There's something called the m.2 ssd then there's standard ssd's then there's mSATA which i think is discontinued.I would appreciate if someone could help me with this problem
Also please critique the parts of my build which ill be updating later

DDR4 only matters if your getting an X99 board, which for this build you shouldnt be. So far it doesnt offer much of a performance improvement over DDR3 yet anyway.

M.2 and mSATA are only a concern if your using a laptop, or conversely a high end motherboard which does have support for it. For a typical desktop machine, plain old SATA is all you are going to deal with.

So when would be the most optimal time to start building my future proof gaming/htpc build that will last at least 5 years?
also is there anything else that i should be waiting for?(new graphic cards and/or hdd/ssd or even some pretty monitors)
Thanks!

Its rumoured that the GTX900 series (their skipping 800) will release in the next two weeks, with yet more rumour that its a paper release so availability will be basically non existent (eg the GTX680 launch).
At the very least its worth waiting just a bit for the time being.

However over a time frame of 5yrs, there will always be some compelling reason to upgrade your stuff. Whether your rig will last 5yrs is completely dependant on your expectations of the rig over time as well. If you want to be maxing out all the settings in every game at 4k, then you will need to upgrade a lot more regularly than someone who is content to play at 1080p and to lower settings as time goes.

There is no optimal time. Now, 6 months from now, 18 months from now.....just beyond <whatever date you choose>, there will be some new thing on the horizon.
When do you want to start playing?

@manofchalk I don't mind playing games at low settings as long as i can at least play them at optimal settings with build I'm going with rather than buying a low cost PC and having to ship it to my country(many tax issues so going for one time investment), again for newer parts to support that game, in the coming years. I'm aware that now indie games are becoming more and more popular but maybe not as enjoyable than AAA titles, but that's after 5 years. Can you give a few suggestions? It would be much appreciated. Thanks again! :D

@USAFRet But some technologies have been long awaited by consumers(for example the huge time gap in ddr3 and ddr4 ram) so I don't want to take any chances in shipping new parts to my country for improving my PC experience. I'll probably start my build late this year after college so I'm open for any suggestions for my gaming PC and don't forget I'll be placing the build in my living room for it to play all of my media, but I don't have a NAS server which I'll be getting later eventually, so i will have to fit 3-4 drives in my rig. I'm an old user of XBMC so I'll be sticking with the hardware that will be capable of running all the heavy skins and fanarts seamlessly.

I too have enjoyed Super Meat Boy, as I am not a huge fan of shooters but certainly enjoy them with my friends. I would like some pointers on what hardware i should choose for my gaming/htpc build. Thanks a bunch!!
