Every other time or so when I try to boot my computer i go straight into the UEFI, and my Kingston SSD (that I have the OS on) is missing from the SATA devices list. It's not listed under the boot priority list either.
I've tried updating the intel chipset, the bios version, and switched power cables and the SATA cable, but to no avail. And I've reset the settings to optimized default. HWMonitor tells me all the temperatures are within range.

Relevant specifications are:
Asus Z-97 a motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670
Kingston SNV425-S2 128GB
Intel i7-4790K

The boot issue started when I switched to the new motherboard and cpu so that leads me to believe this is not an issue with the SSD drive itself.

Please help!

Hi Martin,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer our assistance. If different SATA port and cables do not make a difference than there may be something going on with the drive. Being intermittently detected is definitely not a good thing. We stand by all our products and can replace it under it's three year warranty. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

Answering my own question in case anyone else has this problem:

The issue seems to be an underlying problem with some older SSDs that don't fully meet the SATA specs. At least an issue with similar symptoms exists with Z87 motherboards.
This guy had the same issues with an Asus Z87 chipset motherboard, and one of the replies link to this review of the motherboard in question where this is explained in more detail, if somewhat vaguely.

I tested the drive with an older computer and the BIOS always detected the drive without fault during boot.

There seems to be a fix for the Z87 motherboards, but I've been in contact with Asus support and there is no such fix for Z97. They didn't even seem to be aware of the problem with some older SSDs. And the SNV425-S2 drive is not listed as supported under the mobo specifications on asus webpage.

I've contacted the retailer for the Kingston SSD, but they won't ship out a replacement as it was over four years ago since I bought the drive.
