Hello,
I have a CIT USB SATA/IDE HDD enclosure that upon first install was detected but my laptop wouldn't recognise it with initializing it. I don't want to do that as it will delete the data I'm trying to retrieve. I found a forum on the internet which told me to unistall it in disk managment and then try again. So I did this but now it's not detected at all. There is power to the enclosure as the lights come on but nothing on my laptop. What can I do? I need my laptop to see it and to get the data off the disk

Let's take little steps. First, what kind of laptop are you using?
Second, can you see the drive at all in Disk Management, Device Management, or BIOS (working backwards in complexity)?
Can you see the drive at all on another machine?

It sounds to me like you have two problems - a corrupt drive and a botched disk management. Can you tell us exeactly what "uninstall it in disk management" means or provide a link to the forum? As far as I can recall, those two terms don't match, but my memory isn't perfect.

OK. So did you follow the post to uninstall it in Device Manager (not Disk Manager, which would have done something nastier)?

If the Device Manager does not recognize that something is attached, and it's not visible in BIOS, something most likely died. I am handy with machines, and if I determined that not even BIOS was detecting anything I would
1) Try it on different machines, with different cables. If it's capable of both USB and eSata connections, try it with both.
2) If it's still not seen physically, try recovery software like Recuva or Easeus' data recovery. I would not expect either to succeed, but little steps first.
3) I would remove the drive from the case, likely voiding the warranty, and attach it directly to the motherboard of my main machine. But you only have a laptop. Maybe take it over to a friend who has a tower system and is familiar with the insides.

Good luck.

Oh, a thought. Does it take an external power source? If not, it may not be getting enough power from the USB port. I also try using my powered USB hub in cases like this, but you don't have one?
