When I run prime95 and coretemp my CPU gets up to its tj max in a few minutes. Its really annoying because I would like to overclock my CPU, but with these temps I don't think that'll happen. Can anyone help explain to me why this happens?

I use Corsair Link as my fan controller, and I have it set with fans at maximum speed while I run prime95. I use the stock fans as an intake. My CPU idles at about 33 degrees Celsius. I've tried resetting my bios, and reapplying thermal paste. The screws are as tight as I can get them on the water block.

System Specs:
Intel 4670k
MSI GD-65 motherboard
H100i water cooler
EVGA GTX 780 GPU

I must've missed something. Did you say your machine crashes at 33c?

Are you certain you didn't get a faulty Cooler (check with the manufacturer about a warranty replacement)

No, sorry. My PC idles while doing nothing at 33c, and when I run prime95 it gets up to 100c in a couple minutes.

How would I tell if its a faulty cooler? My Corsair link software says the pump is running at about 2200 rpm, and you can feel the fluid moving in the tubes.

I found the answer myself. I figured I'd post it here for anyone else who has this problem.

The Problem:

The back plate of the H100i was loose when I installed it. There was about 2-3mm of give, but the motherboard standoffs were screwed in all the way.

The Solution:

I went to the hardware store and bought 5/32 neoprene washers. I put two on each of the back plate pegs and re installed my H100i. I now don't go about 65C in prime95
