Hello,

I have purchased a storage unit (abandoned) at auction. One of the items i ended up with in the unit is over 50 desktop hard drives; It appears the prior owner was in a computer repairman. I am of course selling the items.

First
I want to make sure each hard drive is in satisfactory condition or not to sell.

Second
I also want to make sure to sell the drives without any personal info on them so there respective prior owners are not potentially harmed.

Lastly, I have time to sell these and don't need to sell them to a middle man or warehouseman buying in bulk; so, I can sell the on Craigslist/Ebay/Amazon and earn more per unit; but, I have never sold the technical things before and don't know how to sell them.

Thank you.

Jason

Solution
If you have a pc, install each hard drive and test it.
Drive manufacturers have test utilities that you can download.
Then, there are utilities to do a secure wiping of the drive.
I don't think you need to go overboard here and use one of the long running dod secure erase options.

To get an idea of the price, go to ebay and look for the drive in used condition.
Then filter on completed auctions. In green, you will see what the drives actually sold for.
I expect IDE drives to be unsalable. Sata drives will have some sort of market.
