Weird Noise from my desktop

My pc has started making weird sounds and I cannot figure what is causing it. The noise is not too regular but comes at random times and really just sounds like a machine is dying. It changes from quiet to loud and so on until it stops.

I have pretty much switched off my case fans with case controls and it doesn't affect it at all, so I've ruled them out. The possibilities I see is the heatsink/fan, psu fan or graphics card's fan. No cables seems to be touching any fans and the sound doesn't really sound like something is touching.

I build the pc myself and it was my first time so I'm scared something might be on its deathbed, It took me 1 year to realise that the reason I hear a disgusting noise when playing games was that I hadn't removed the plastic cover on the graphics card so I'm prone to silly mistakes like that.

Is there anyway I can start looking for the source of the problem?

My spec:

i5-2500k processor Sandy Bridge
Asus p8p67 mobo
4gb Corsair Ram
Radeon 6950 2gb
Antec 600W Modular PSU ( can't remember the model)

Solution
Ok first try removing the card and using a cpu stress test like prime95 that will force the cpu to have its fan at 100% load.
If that makes noise its either the cpu cooler or the psu.
Try then a game with the card installed and check for the noise.. If it shows up again its definetely the psu , if the first cpu try didnt do it and now it does it its definetely the gpu
:D Hope that helps

Thank you for the suggestions. I did a prime95 test and found another problem, eek. the temperature of the cores rose to their max in about 5 minutes of the stress test so I decided its best not to continue until I sort this out. I think it makes sense to replace the retail CPU cooler anyway so I'll do that and see if it will sort out my sound problems anyway.

Hey getting high temps with prim95 isnt a problem.. I mean if they are on the max temperatures the brand owner presents to you in their webpage lets say. Because the cpu is 100% stressed and temps go high in a matter of seconds.
