Quiet heatsink for Socket AM3+ that is both low profile and narrow?

I need to replace the stock heat sink and fan on my AMD 8350 because it is extremely noisy. Obviously I want something a fair bit quieter, although perfect silence may be beyond my budget. The trouble is that I think my tower case is a little bit narrow (I don't know how to measure the clearance exactly, but I think 15cm would be pushing it for a heat sink) so I need something that is relatively low profile. Unfortunately I also have a memory slot very close to the CPU socket on my motherboard (an ASRock 980DE3/U3S3), which could make some of the rose-shaped low profile heatsinks, such as those made by Zalman, problematic (I don't know how much clearance they give for memory sticks seated underneath them).

Can anyone suggest a mid-priced quiet Socket AM3+ heat sink that will fit my motherboard and my case and that will be capable of cooling my 8 cores?

Thanks!

Thanks for replying!

I haven't got any information on the tower. The vendor named most of the other components of the computer, but not the tower. All I know is that it is really cheap. It looks and feels dirt cheap. What I can say is that the exterior width of the case is 17.5cm at all points.

In the future I may be able look at replacing it and getting a really fancy cooling system, but that's outside what I can comfortably budget for right now.

I can totally see where you are coming from. I have been a victim of FX-8350's stock heatsink fan's noise for over an year now.

I installed the Cooler Master Hyper 212x just last night on my FX-8350. There is a HUGE difference in noise and temperatures.

Even at near to 100% load, the rpm on it's 120mm fan stays below 2000. It's height is around 15.8 cms. If you are willing to measure, remove the stock heatsink and measure the space from very top metal plate of the CPU to the side of the case. It'll be good if it's even as close as 15.9 or 16 cms.

You shouldn't be concerned with the RAM slots as the fan can be slid up and down to make room.

If your tower can support it, I'll suggest a Hyper 212x or a Hyper 212 EVO. It's perfect for what you need, which is suppression of noise.

If not, you can look into Cooler Master Hyper TX3(Dimensions:- 92 x 92 x 25 mm). You'll get a bit higher rpm with it if compared with the 212x but it'll be way less noisy than the stock and you can expect a temperature difference of about 10 centigrade or more under load.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry for not answering sooner but I got distracted by other things :D

I ended up getting a Fractal Design Define R4 case and a Noctua NH-D15 heatsink. This has proved to be a massive improvement and now the most significant noise coming from the machine is a slight whine from the little fan on my modest GT610 graphics card. Since I don't need great graphics performance, I should be able to replace this with a passive heatsink and then the machine should be very near silent.
