Ok, need someones help here. I have a custom built desktop that I use to be able to install and run XP-64 bit. When the computer was built 4 years ago, I had both XP-32 and 64 bit installed on the same drive, which was partitioned into three equal units. I later removed the XP-64 bit operating system cause I did not need it and not much support in terms of device drivers.

I recently bought Windows 7 64 bit and each time I try to install it I get a blue screen and each time a different code. I also tried to re-install the XP-64 and it now will not install giving me the blue screen also.

Here is what I can do, I can install both Windows7 and XP both in 32 bit versions. Both operating systems install with no problems.

This is what I have tried, thus far. Testing the 4 GB of RAM, Switching video cards, installing on a different harddrive, all of these test have failed to install any 64 bit operating system. I am at a loss, makes no sense to me other than having a problem somewhere in the Processor or mother board??

The processor is Intel Core 2 Quad 9400 Quad-Core 2.66 GHz

The motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel.

How can I determine what is at fault here?? It seems strange that XP-64 bit use to install and now no 64 bit operating system will install.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

I think this is a driver problem I had with an older system:

Enter BIOS, and look for a setting that allows you to set what mode your HDD is operating at. It should be possible to choose between AHCI or IDE (or maybe it's ATA), and your current setting is probably AHCI.
Switch to IDE (or ATA), and try the install again.

After you have installed Windows and everything is working you can enter BIOS again to switch back to AHCI.

Strange problem, it could be the motherboard/cpu but not sure.

Couple suggestions you can try is, try another dvd drive and changing the SATA setting in bios to AHCI or IDE which ever one is not current.

Edit: JoakimL beat me to it but should mention changing any SATA mode after installing Windows will require a manual edit in the registry. Easily found on google.
