Brief specs:

i7-4710HQ
860M - (4gb)
512gb SSD
16Gbs of ram (@1600mhz)

Issue:

So I've got an external mouse/keyboard, and most importantly monitor.

Well, basically, while gaming, or running anything graphics worthy, I get a seriously *low* fps. (Like 10fps on high in BF4, 40ish on low). I have whitelisted all of the games so that they're not being used on integrated graphics and whatnot, but I continuously got a really low fps on stuff that should be really easy for my laptop to do, and I've finally found the solution;

When my laptop lid is open, I have no performance issues, at all, game runs at 60+ fps, on high, No problem, close the lid, instantly back down to 10 fps.

I would prefer to keep my lid closed if possible, are there any recommendations, or reasons why this might be occurring?

I THINK(and I COULD BE MISTAKEN)that the laptop goes into a sleep mode when you close the lid
maybe theres a setting somewhere

Nope. There is a setting that prevents the laptop from going into sleep when it's closed, which I am currently using, so that is not the issue. If I had the setting disabled, then my laptop would go to sleep, and thus my monitor would become idle and display nothing.
