1 Internet Service, Two Modems?

I have Verizon Fios. The modem they set up for me is downstairs in my basement. I want to add a second modem in my bedroom. I just built a computer and want to use a wired connect. To do this I was planning on buying a coax splitter and connecting on coax cable to my TV and the other to my modem for ethernet to my computer. Will this work? If not, why? Would I have to buy another internet line?

PS: I have explored other options to get ethernet to my bedroom. I just want to know if this is a possible solution.

Pretty sure your ISP would not be cool with running two modems on one internet line. Generally, you probably accepted using one modem on the line, and having two on there would cause issues similar to trying to run two 56k modems over the same line, in that they're trying to send signals over the same media and would cause interference, if it works at all. If you want to pay for it and they're willing to run a second line, that would work, but you're probably looking at whatever the cost is to run an extra line from the demarcation point. You'd likely have an cheaper go of it hiring a decent contractor to run some Cat-5e up from the basement to a new jack or something.

Damn. I was afraid of this, but thank you. I didn't really want to run an ethernet jack all the way upstairs.. but I guess I have no other options. Any idea how much performance is lost in a phone to ethernet converter?

Ethernet can give greater throughput than your Fios connection. If you cannot run cat 5e wire to your bedroom, try powerline adapters. They may limit the throughput, but typically have low latency if they work. This makes them particularly suitable for gaming, mostly OK for video streaming and web browsing but poor for large file transfers. Performance is never assured with powerline adapters, so buy them from a place with a good return policy.
