Cliffs are:

Built new PC today
Used HD that I bought for my old PC because I had a hard disk error so I tried replacing it to see if it would fix it
It didn't, so I figured it was time to build a new rig rather than fight with it.
Everything is working (some fans aren't working but I'll figure those out later once I configure the built in fan controller) fine so far. I can get to boot menus, the BIOS menus, etc.
I bought a new copy of Windows 8.1 and have not installed it on anything.
When I go to install it, I get to the set up menu but it says I am missing drivers.
I put in the MOBO CD (Gigabyte Z97x Gaming 5 mobo) but it still can't detect any drivers.
Can't go onto a website to download the drivers because I can't get windows working to download them.

How do I go abouts doing this on a brand new PC?

I forgot to mention that the old HD has an old ass copy of windows XP on it (like 2002 home edition or something) that I used to test to see if it worked with the old rig. Would that be a possible problem? Is there a way to wipe the XP OS completely? In the new PC, XP doesn't load. It gets to the XP loading screen but then it just loads and loads and loads but never gets past it.

I also have access to a laptop that I could use to download things - I'm just not sure what to download

So just download the full driver pack on this laptop and throw them onto a DVD? Do I have to burn them as an image or something? Not too good with these sorts of things - first time I've ever ran into an issue like this ;(

Don't bother with the drivers. Win 8.1 will have the basic required drivers for a Z97 installation. Without a working OS you have nowhere to install the drivers! The only exception to this is with certain RAID installations, Windows will ask for the RAID controller driver, but even that is pretty rare.

What is the source of the Win 8.1? MS DVD? D/L from MS Store? Torrent?

What is the make and model of your "old" HDD?

Has the old HDD ever worked properly in a previous installation?

Does the old HDD show in the mobo's BIOS?

Have you tried a different SATA port on the mobo?

Are all of the SATA ports the same color? The boot drive should be installed on the lowest numbered port, e.g. Sata_0, Sata_1.
