I have been having problems with USB connected hard Drives since the 2.5" first came out. Most of my drives act as if they are not getting enough current to run. (Motor not starting or drive sits there and beeps, etc. Theywork fine if connected internally, but even with the dual usb cables I have problems. Most drives need about 550 mA. to run but what kind of current does a notebook supply?

Solution
Hi
If your notebook conforms to standards which it should, then USB 2.0 outputs 500mA and USB 3.0 outputs 900mA.
I suspect you are using USB 2.0 and it is possible that your notebook can only supply 500mA in total to multiple USB ports.
Unfortunately the only solution may be to get a powered USB hub and sacrifice some portability.
