It's not going fast at all. I think I've narrowed down the problem. My GPU isn't properly connected but here's the deal. The R9 270x has eight power pin connector thingys, they look like this.

However, when both of these are plugged in, I completely lose any sort of signal to my monitor

I have the monitor plugged into the graphics card, I've got a signal but the games (specifically Gone Home) is running incredibly slow. Both power connectors are in. I've also checked the make sure the GPU is firmly connected to the motherboard.

Yes. It also perfectly lines up with the case. As a matter if fact, it's tmthe only conceivable place a GPU would go on this particular motherboard.

I'm getting well below 30 fps (it's practically a slide show) on Gone Home on the lowest settings with a 60hz monitor.
Counter Strike: GO (on medium settings) was also incredibly choppy.

Download and install Afterburner if you haven't already.

From Afterburner, while running CS GO - What gpu and memory clock speeds? What voltage? what temp?

From bios/uefi (install 'A Tuning' that came with your mobo) while running CS GO, - what cpu temp?, what 12v, 5v and 3.3v readings?

Here's an update after I just woke up.
My monitor has to be plugged directly into the monitor port for some reason, yesterday it refused to give a signal unless it was plugged into the graphics card.
For the first time ever, Afterburner recognizes my graphics card by name, however it's showing nothing on the graphs or drivers.
I just played CS:GO on high settings and it ran like butter.
I refuse to accept that everything just started working by itself, can someone explain this to me?

Update: After a forced restart, all the games are running slow again. Just what the hell is going on here? Going to try another restart and see if it does anything.

Update 2: Restarting the computer had no effect but, I noticed that the onboard GPU (the one that comes with the CPU, specifically an Intel HD Graphics 4600) was disabled (I personally disabled it). I turned it back on and booted up Gone Home. The game is running much smoother than before, but it's still not as smooth as it should be. (well below 30 FPS).
I'm running Gone Home on Medium settings, that shouldn't be a problem for my computer.
Any advice?

Update 3: I went into the configuration thingy and changed the primary chipset to the PCI/E slot (which is what my GPU is plugged into). I hit up CS:GO and it ran a buttery smooth super sexy game at high settings. Then the game completely crashed on me. Will update when I have a confirmed lock.

So I've got everything working but everytime I load up CS:GO I get a grey screen the moment I pick my team and spawn. I also tried Guns of Icarus Online but I couldn't make it to the menu. When these freezes occur, the only thing that works is holding down the power button until the machine powers off.
Any suggestions as to what I should do?

I don't have access to another card, and the only other PC available is my parent's computer. And they certainly wouldn't approve of me messing about with their PC.

It could be one of several things:

1/ insufficient power to the gpu - your 500w evga should be plenty though
2/ faulty GPU - this is a possibility
3/ driver problems - this is the most likely imo
