GPU Update dilemma

Okay folks, here's the deal. I currently have an outdated EVGA 570GTX SC card. My birthday present is going to be my upgrade. My birthday is the first of October. It looks as though it will be close to the release of the release of the 800 series of cards and thus my dilemma. I'm currently looking at a 770 GTX, but if the 870 is out by then, should I ask my lovely wife for that, or stick with my guns on the 770? From my understanding the 870's (or w/e they decide to name them) will only be referenced cards and thus not be as well performing or priced as a superclocked 770.

So, I humbly ask your opinion. As if you were in my shoes. I've been long awaiting an upgrade to my GPU. Would you go with the 770 or try the shiny new maxwell 870? Couple things to note:

- I want to stick with an NVidia card
- I'm willing to wait until after my actual Bday (within reason) for the 800 series
- This is primarily for gaming
- My CPU is an OC'd I5 2500k
- I'm looking at a price range of under $450. If the 780's drop below that I'd certainly look into it
- Resolution of 1920x1080

Thanks in advance for all opinions on the matter! Cheers!

They will be better, it's a new series so the cost may be justified, but right now there are no benchmarks, so just wait for them to be released, no need to guess what they can achieve, might as well wait for the benchmarks to be released

I agree, wait. We are pretty much at the end of life for the GK104 (powered the 660ti/670/680/760/770) as it came out in March 2012.

Go for a nice new maxwell 860/960 or 870/970 (depending on what they call it). Even reference models will outperform the 770. I expect even the 860/960 to slightly outperform the 770 while using much less power.

Thanks for the responses! I will definitely wait for the next series to drop. But I guess the big question for me is, will the 870 (or 970) be better enough to warrant the price over a SC'd 770? From what I can recall with Nvidia cards, the 770 will drop from around $420 to about $350, while the 870 will likely be $450 or so. Will it be a significant upgrade from the 870 to 770 to warrant the extra $100? I know these are rough estimates but I don't think I'm too far off.
