What happens if I buy a matched set now and a matched set later?

I just purchased some quad channel memory for my X99 build and I had to go for a lower capacity than I had originally budgeted for due to such high prices. It is quad channel and will consume 4 of the 8 DIMM slots on my board, channel ABC&D on 'lane' 1 ( don't know the exact term). If I were to double my memory capacity in the near future, saving up for an "identical" kit and plug it into the other lane would I see any issues with performance? I know the four sticks that occupy the four channels are matched but to what extent are the two lanes matched as well in 8x kits?

If you buy two matched sets of 4 sticks, they should work together. However, be prepared to adjust timings if needed since the two sets were not matched with each other. But they should work.

They might and they might not, any time you mix sets of DRAM it can be and often is problematic (even identical sets, same exact model) which is why they sell such a variety of sets....The initial DDR4 sets may be a little easier to get them to play as they have come out with such loose timings, but also keep in mind that the XMP programming for the sticks will be different in the advanced timings, so chances are real good than adjustments will be needed to get hem to play nice when mixed...and that's if they will play... The packaged sets have all sticks tested to play together and are therefore guaranteed to all play nice - they offer no guarantees on mixing two packages. Again only time will tell on DDR4 but the forums are full of threads of people who have mixed sets and had nothing but problems, I help a few every single day
