jumping mouse curser

My mouse curser jumps so much that I mix up letters from other words that I type words all mixed up with each other ,I tried something called ' touch freeze'. But it did not help!.
This is a used dell windows 7 laptop, my first laptop!

I am not very savvy with computers .

Is it possible that while you are typing the palms of your hands are brushing the touchpad and making the cursor jump? This happens to my father a lot on his laptop. Usually there's a quick button to disable the touchpad for this exact reason (function-F6 on my laptop).
