My Asus laptop was updating its system overnight. I turned it on the next morning, and I have been hit with the windows 8 version of the blue screen. Smiley face, etc. Automatic repair does not work, neither does refresh. I have not been brave enough to try reset yet, but even then it may not work. I fear that my laptop may have run out of battery in the middle of this update, and that is why it no longer works. I am quite good with computers in a general sense (more the programmes), but I barely know anything about the specifics of the hardware, etc. Please help!

Edit: it also says something about "Log file: C:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

Can you access Safe Mode? At what point does the BSOD show up?

I don't have my laptop on me now, but from what I remember, after trying to auto-repair it sends me to the blue smiley face page. I'm not sure if that IS the equivalent of BSOD for Windows 8. I tried hitting f8 on start up like on my old dell, to get into safe mode, but I don't actually know if that is how you do it on Windows 8.

Do you have your Windows 8 disc? You need to try running a chkdsk on the drive.

Sadly I do not have my windows 8 disc. How exactly would I run a chkdsk?
And if I got my hands on a windows 8 disc (long shot) what would I do?

You could boot to it and run a chkdsk from within it, it gives you access to the command prompt.

You could do a reset but that will remove all of your user data.

I am attempting to do the chkdsk now. There's a log file thing I've added to the original post

same thing happened to me, the whole auto repair seems like it doesn't do anything, and none of those buttons worked for me either, what i did was i just left it alone for a while after letting it "repair" mine is a hp so it was stuck on this hp screen for a while but thankfully it came back after and hour or so.

I'd say just leave it for a while and see what happens, that's really your only choice since nothing else works mate.
