Hello!

I've helped a colleague of mine assemble a new PC and everything worked fine for a few months. All of a sudden his DVD drive won't read any discs, but if he reboots with the disc still in it reads it fine until he opens the drive, and then it won't read anything until he reboots again.

Any suggestions what might be causing this problem?

Some things he can try:

Try a different data cable/SATA port.

Make sure data and power cables are firmly seated on both ends.

Reinstall/update the DVD drive's driver.

Reinstall/update the mobo chipset driver.

Try the the drive on a different computer - if it does the same thing, I'd RMA the drive. If it works fine on a different PC, but still acts up on his, it's likely a driver or hardware issue inboard of the drive.

My new Gigabyte H97 mobo is narrow so I no longer need to place the optical drive in the first or third bay to avoid the power supply power connector. This may also affect recognition of the drive due to electrical interference. Try moving the drive if it is near the power connector.
