I have a pre-assembled HP pavilion slim line (2008 -very old I don't really use it)
So the problem is it was running windows 7 for a long time but was getting slower
so I just downgraded to vista home basic (which was stock) but still it is very unresponsive and slow and earlier I remember it wasn't so horribly slow. (windows is properly installed and is genuine and updated completely)

SPECIFICATIONS
PROCESSOR -core2duo e4500 @ 2.2ghz
RAM-2gb ddr2 677mhz (single) -(I added another(2x2=4gb) but I get blue screen error after some time and the rams are healthy so I guess it doesn't support it)
HARDISK- SATA 320 GB
GPU- stock GeForce 7100 (removed 210silent because now I don't game on this)
PSU- just 160w this can be the reason why my 2 rams don't work well (also gpu 210silent worked well with such low psu but I still removed it so that other things can get good amount)

so what tweak can make my machine faster (bearable) I wont game on this but want it for doing stuff on ms. office and browsing stuff.
Also want it to be stable

how fast is the CPU running? E4500 should do 2.2GHz no overclock but will step down a lot at low loads. Install CPUz and prime95, load the processor with prime95 and let us know what CPUz says about the processor at that point (temps and speed). No need for defrag, new install.

Reinstalling Win7 might help, by all accounts it is a little less resource - heavy than Vista.

Try testing the HDD - the Pavilion might have a BIOS utility for testing for soft errors on the HDD, try that and see. Too many errors and the system will slow.

More memory. It should support 4gb, and a 190W PSU is enough for the system described - how sure are you the memory is good? have you run any tests to check it, because 'my PC eventually blue screens when I plug in a second memory stick' sounds a lot like a faulty second memory stick to me

Back when Windows 7 came out, various sites did testing on it. The general consensus was that Windows 7 was about 15% slower than Windows XP, but 15% faster than Vista. I would stick with a fresh load of Windows 7.

P.S. It could use more RAM (4 GB).

its not win7 slowing down the machine.this is,however, pretty much minimal to run 7. you need to find out if your mb will support 4gb of ram (most do).make sure the new 2gb stick has the same specs as the old one ie ram timing, frequency and case latency.once you have your ram figured out you can tweak windows 7 to make it run faster.the first thing to do is type msconfig in the search pane and run the command.go to startup and uncheck any program not needed at startup.this will make it boot faster.here is a guide to tweaking your windows services.this will make windows run a lot faster.
http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-7-service-pack-1-service-configurations/
and finally go to control panel>system>advanced settings and click on performance.change the visual effects settings to "best performance".later on you can customize the visual effects to suit you but this will get you in the ball park.this should make your system run faster.

I tried many test for the ram it shows them healthy
I first thought the ram id faulty so I got it replaced twice but still!!
also its a 160 watt PSU (can I overclock little--but need stable system)
and I will just post the results from cpu-z and prime95 in a minute (slow pc) :p

with that psu you cant overclock.as for the ram see my post and make sure both sticks are the same.if you tweak win7 using the guides.it will run pretty well with the hardware you have.my kids computer runs an intel dual core e2100 and runs really well.

cpu z shows core speed -- max-2199.88 MHz (prime 29 was running)
memory clock shows 333.3mhz whereas the ram is 667mhz
I don't see any temperature in cpu-z
but speccy shows it 45 degree
I don't understand prime95 but all test are passed.

can it be that my processor/mother board/PSU doesn't support 4 gb rams
the HP's online site says this system does support total 4gb (2x2) of each dim 800mhz
also should I put my GeForce 210 back on it??
*RAMS are identical. but I think I should replace them with a 800mhz good/best quality ram.
and please give link to the guild lines you mentioned @ aldan

You can't overclock an OEM pc period. Except an Alienware.

It is HP pavailion S3660in (if you want to check specs)

The hp site says that it does support 2gb ddr2 dimms(x2=4gb) @800mhz

But my current ram is 667mhz(sticker says so)
But cpu-z shows clock 333mhz(why) so i was thinking of getting a better/best quality ram for it @800mhz
2gb ddr2 -but will it support 4gb ram ??please see the specs and tell(search HP s3660in on gpogle and open the hp link)

The ram i have now are identical 2gb ddr2 but the system ends up on blue screen after some time and rams get really hot (i touched to know)

So should i buy 2x 2gb ram 800mhz ram??

your ram is dual channel and while it shows in cpuz as 333.3 it is actually running at 667.multiply 333.3by 2 to get your actual ram speed.nothing can be overclocked here, but win7 will run a lot better than vista,so if you have a legit copy of win7 thats what i would install.
