3-Pin UART USB to 4-Pin UART USB? Can I connect the machines this way and have M1 get noticed by PC when connecting M2?

Solution
Hello,

USB connection consists in 4 wires: +5V, DATA-, DATA+, GND. If both devices are self-powered (each one has its own PSU), you can use only 3 wires: DATA-, DATA+ and GND. Usually, the black wire is GND and the red wire is +5V, so the wiring from your picture wouldn't work (you must bring both devices to the same electrical potential, therefore the GND wire is a must). You must search for the pinouts on both machines (3-pin and 4-pin plugs) to be sure you wouldn't damage anything.
