hi I just built a gaming pc and I am using the stock cooler on my i5 4690k while I am just browsing the internet my cpu reaches 49 degrees Celsius should I be worried

More about : cpu temperature

To be sure, download prime95 and stress the CPU to see how high it reaches. If it reaches 70 degrees, stop the stress testing immediately. You should probably reinstall your cooler and apply some better thermal paste. If it doesn't reach that temperature, you'll be fine.

devils canyon cpus run hot, get a better cooler. a gaming pc should have a descent cooler anyway. my 4790k would reach max temps and trottle with the stock cooler. and its not because i dont have good airflow.

Take Night's suggestion with a grain of salt. I agree that you should use prime95, or any graphic intensive game and see what temperatures you get, but if it's over 70C don't worry that much. Devils Canyon cores in general run hot, I'd say an optimal temperature for that CPU under load is anywhere between 70-85C. Anything above 85C or 80C to be safe, could be cause for worry. It also depends on your cooler, are you using a stock air cooler or an aftermarket water/air cooler? Also your thermal paste could be crappy, or you aren't getting good air flow in your case (if you're using an air cooler for your CPU). Just run prime95, see what temperatures you get and then report back here and we'll help you further.

so 49 degrees is an average temp when browsing with devils canyon

Yes, here is a link.

Download the 32/64 bit depending on what you're running.

Let me rephrase, games in general don't use that much CPU power (compared to other programs). Which program came with the 780? I feel like it would be more for benchmarking the GPU since that's what games heavily rely on. To truly test your CPU at 100% load, just use prime95 and use the Small FFT's option.

its valley benchmark

Either way, run anything intensive. Game/prime95/valley.. I just need to know the temps under load to better assist you. When you do run something, have task manager open and tell me what % the CPU load is under.

okay my cpu was at 50% load and the highest temp was 70 degrees

50% means only two cores were being stressed. You're getting close to the limits of your CPU temperature with only two cores. Do you hear the fan spinning faster when you stress test?

Knowing what it is at 100% would be very helpful. If it's at 70C @ 50%, then I would assume it would be 90C+ @ 100%. I don't want to tell you to reapply/buy new thermal paste, reinstall your cooler/buy a new cooler if that's not the case.

You can start by only removing the cooler and applying some thermal paste yourself and see if that helps. Make sure you properly clean the cooler and the CPU of any old thermal paste before applying any new thermal paste. It'll cost you 10 dollars rather than 30. If you can spare the money, it's fine though.

On another note... The temperature you gave us on idle, is that in windows or in BIOS? Does the temperature in the bios correlate with the one in windows? It could simply be a wrong reading as well..

I reinstalled my cooler and now at idle in the bios and in windows 8.1 it reads 35-40 degrees

Run your CPU at 100% load, what is it at? I had a computer that idled at 40C but under 100% load it ran at 100C. My current CPU runs at 40C idle and 60C under 100% load.

You aren't even installing it, you're just running it once it downloads from the web. It's a free program that is reliable and will give us the data we need to better help you.

I'd say that's average for a stock air cooler. If you wanted better temps then get a better cooler, but reinstalling the cooler seemed like it helped, good job.
