I have a Win 7 computer that crashed but thankfully have a WD Passport external HD that was backing up files using their WD SmartWare.

With my new computer Win 8.1, I have installed the WD software from the external harddrive. While setting it up, I asked it to begin backing up my new computer (much like the old one seeing as how this supposedly saved me).

After setting up the auto back up, I went to retrieve my old files using WD Smartware, and all it shows on the HD are the files now being backed up.

I can navigate to the external HD using Win Explorer and see all my old files, which are protected and not a direct copy and paste (e.g. the latest files is named: 21e1a65aae278e93e40e). Anyone have an idea on how to "retrieve" the files that are there, but the WD SmartWare can't see...

Hey there, aannice!

When you open your WD Passport, do you see a folder named: smartware.swstor somewhere?
If you explore this folder, you should be able to find your files there.
Here's an article from WD's knowledge base that you might find useful as well:

Let me know if it helped! :)
