I need to find my overkill on first build, want my total price below $1200.

Hello, Tom's! I've been scoping out components for a complete new gaming build. My first one.
I've been using an ASUS G73jh for the past four years, and I feel like it's time for an upgrade.

I'm thinking of a desktop (space isn't an issue), and I don't need a new monitor, mouse, keyboard, or sound.
My price goal (not including shipping) is $1100, but if that's an impossible goal given my requirements, it'll change.

Requirements:
SSD main storage, backing up weekly or biweekly onto an internal HDD.
Radeon R9 290 (I really love the current value)
I won't be overclocking CPU or GPU.

What I've initially chosen:
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme4 ($143 from Newegg)
Processor: Intel i5-4590 (Cooler included) ($160 from my local Microcenter)
Graphics Card: Sapphire TRI-X OC R9 290 ($420 from Newegg)
Memory: Team Vulcan 2x4GB PC3 19200 ($71 from Newegg)
Storage (SSD): SanDisk x300s 512GB ($322 from Amazon)
Storage (HDD): WesternDigital Velociraptor 10k rpm 600GB + LG Optical Drive ($140 combo from Newegg)
Case: Zalman MS800 ($75 from Amazon)
Power Supply: Corsair CX600 600W Plus Bronze ($60 from my local Microcenter)

All adds up to $1391, if my arithmetic is correct. So: I'm about $300 over my soft goal of $1100.

Could I get a cheaper motherboard? Perhaps there's another SSD that's less expensive as well, with the same capacity, while not skimping on reliability.

Solution
"Storage (SSD): SanDisk x300s 512GB ($322 from Amazon)
Storage (HDD): WesternDigital Velociraptor 10k rpm 600GB" here's were all the money is going.
Get a smaller SSD(120Gb is sufficient the os but you could go upto 256gb if you feel the need) and a 1Tb-2tb 7200 rpm hdd for storage. A 10k velociraptor is expensive and not really needed. Also the CX series is not very good(cheap caps) and for this kinda build you should be using a higher quality PSU. Get something 500w+ from tier 1 or 2 in this list http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html

Not much you can trim from that without going for a slower CPU or smaller SSD.

A few notes:

-I believe the CX series PSU's aren't so good.
-Don't waste $ on the Velociraptor. They are still much slower than an SSD. You should be able to get a 1TB HDD and DVD drive for about half that price.

You're absolutely right, no reason for a velociraptor as the backup drive. I'd save ~$60 then.
Hmm...radically speaking, what about investing in a watercooling unit and downgrading to a 280 or 280x and a lower-tier-but-unlocked i5, overclocking both to gain back performance?

A cheaper unlocked CPU can be OC'd, but any money you save on that you will need to put twice over into a cooler.

A cheaper GPU is obviously an option, but you are of course decreasing performance significantly with every downgrade. I wouldn't go below a 280x.

Maybe you just have to wait a bit and save up?
