Hi there khyatii,

You can check whether the drive is recognized in Disk Management and whether it has a letter assigned. If not you can do so.

Though, this may not be the case. See if you need to partition it or it requires formatting. Keep in mind that these processes will destroy the data.
It will also not hurt if you run the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool to check the drive's health.

How to assign a letter: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/137
WD DLG tool: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810...

Hope this will help,

hello...
i think its what i did in d safe mode that caused this...the passport was showing up on d laptop before that...though not opening the files in it but it did get detected
i tried to assign letter in disk management, but when i click on "my passport", the page freezes, and then " not responding"
what to do then?

You can try reinstalling the drivers of the device. You can do this the following way: Device Manager -> find the USB device -> Uninstall -> turn off the hard drive. After that you can turn it on and let it find and install the drivers automatically. Just make sure you connect it to the USB 3.0 port before downloading the drivers.

Another thing you can do is to reinstall all USB controllers. You can do this the following way:
- Open device manager as above.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
- Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers. Restarting the computer should install the drivers automatically.
- Plug in the removable USB storage device, and see if the issue is resolved.

As I already mentioned in the previous post, it may be a good idea to test it with the DLG tool.

Hope this will help

You can try the extended test and see what exactly is the issue. It can take some time though.

As the data on the drive is really important, I would suggest you to contact one of the WD's Data Recovery Partners. This is your safest bet.

If you want to use some third party software and want to try to recover the data by yourself, you can check out the link that Someone Somewhere posted in the previous comments. Keep in mind that this can further damage the data.

WD Recovery Partners: http://support.wdc.com/recovery/index.asp?lang=en

We don’t have such software and I cannot really recommend one. Just keep in mind that if you decide to use a data recovery company at some point, the less data recovery attempts you have done with the HDD – the better.
