Hey everyone, I'm considering buying a 850 PRO for my MBP 2012. What I'm planning on doing is programming and running xcode. Therefore, I was wondering if it was worth it to pay extra to get the 850 PRO over the 840 EVO.

That's the 840 Pro, not the 850 Pro. The 850 pro is the one that uses the 3D NAND rather than the 2d.

If you plan to keep the SSD for any length of time (will probably outlast its usefulness anyways), the 850 Pro comes with a 10 year warranty and uses 3D NAND which should have quite a bit more endurance according to Samsung. Most drives will fail within a relatively close period of time to the purchase date, but at least it is there if you need to use it in the future. I have the 850 Pro and it runs like a champ. However, if you can get the 840 at a distinctly better price than the 850 then go for it as it is still a great drive.

I got the 840 EVO last night because it was on sale for 118 at bestbuy. I then went home and saw that the 850 ran faster than the 840 but I have no clue how much faster. I looked at some read/write programs runs using a certain software but I have no clue what those numbers represent. I would like to know how the 850 runs in real world applications vs the 840 EVO

Honestly, you will probably not notice much a real world difference. Once my computer gets past the BIOS screen, it boots Windows in less than 5 seconds. I use the 850 Pro and have built machines using the 840 EVO. You will see a difference in synthetic benchmarks but honestly you will not see that much of a difference in real world applications to justify the price increase to the 850 Pro if you can get the 840 Evo on a killer sale.

Also, what size did you get?
