My Windows 8.1 computer freezes every time at the Windows spinning circle after the BIOS. If I start it with the Windows 8 disk/recovery USB, the same happens. I tried the Windows 7 disk, it loads the files then freezes at the glowing Windows logo. A Ubuntu disk freezes as well.

I am able to boot Memtest and it'll run for a day no problems, the same with the Ultimate Boot CD, however many programs on it cause the computer to freeze straight away.

I am able to load the Mini XP from Hirens boot CD and run everything on there fine, but a Windows XP install disk BSODs with 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

I have swapped the sticks of RAM around, used a different GPU, a different PSU, tried different hard drives, updated the BIOS, reset the CMOS, changed the heatsink, but it still freezes after the BIOS.

It's a self build PC, running fine for a year, until last month when it froze in Premiere Pro.

AMD FX-8320
ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
2 x 8GB G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-10666
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost
Samsung SSD 840 120GB
500W BE Quiet PSU

"I have swapped the sticks of RAM around, used a different GPU, a different PSU, tried different hard drives, updated the BIOS, reset the CMOS, changed the heatsink, but it still freezes after the BIOS."

so basically the only thing that could still be broken is your mother board?

sometimes its better just to go to the store where u brought it. or some store that offers repairing services. lot of those stores have equipment that can test your hardware without the use of switching things around.

this is all i can help you with. not really the hardware expert. gl :)

Just a tiny update, I was able to install Windows XP successfully on the D drive by changing the SATA mode to IDE.

XP loads up everytime, but the Windows 7 and 8 DVDs still freeze
