I finally saved up my 1600-1700 I planned on using to build my computer, and see that on the 16th ( I believe) the 900 series cards are coming out. Is it worth the wait ? Pricing ? Thanks !

You can wait and see what the prices are.
If you can't wait, then an i7 4790K and GTX 780 Ti build is the way to go.

I can wait, been waiting for a few months a couple extra weeks dont bother me. Ive read that the 980 should be more powerful than a 780ti ... any confirmation ?

I think Nvidia is going to announce a stopgap set of cards using the old 28nm process to compete with amd.
This is rumored to be the GTX880 and GTX870 cards. The 16nm Maxwell cards will be next year, possibly the GTX980 or such.

If you see a card that is clearly stronger than the current GTX780ti or the R9-290X then expect to pay a goodly price premium for it. Either because of a high list price, or by early adopter price gouging.

That said, if you can wait a bit, that would be prudent. You will likely get decent value at most price points.
