SATA 3 SSD HDD in Compaq Presario V5202TU?

I have a Compaq Presario Notebook Model# V5202TU.
The Laptop is in fine condition with 2 GB DDR2 633 MHz and hence i intend to install a 120GB SATA III HDD in the same for better performance.

Is SATA III (6 GB/s) backward compatible with SATA I?

Please help!

I wouldn't stick a 10k RPM drive in a laptop. The cooling in general isn't very good and they make a lot of heat. Can you find an old SATA II drive? Those should work fine. Otherwise I'd buy from someone who has a great return policy. (or maybe have a local shop test it for you?)

Generally SATA III is compatible with SATA II but to be honest I have never tried to install a SATA III device into a SATA I port so I cant say. I know some SSDs have issues with older SATA ports.

Honestly though if you only have a SATA 1 port you wont really see any performance boost. Your might be more satisfied with a 10,000RPM Hard drive, those units usually have transfer rates between 100-145MBs and your SATA I port is capable of a max transfer rate of 150MBs

@4745454b: true, I didnt consider the fact that it was in a laptop, yeah the heat and extra vibration of beign moved around probably wouldn't be ideal. If you could find a SSD with SATA II like 4745454b suggested, that would serve you best.

Thanks for the inputs everyone! I had decided to go for a 60 GB SATA III SSD from Transcend which is available for 50 bucks on Amazon.
The laptop is literally back from the dead after adding 2 GB RAM and 60 GB SSD. Boot time with Win7 is under 30 seconds which was earlier above 75 seconds with WinXP.
Total upgrade cost in india comes around 80 dollars.
