Graphics Card and Audio

Just wondering if anyone knows if it possible to connect 3 different monitors to the gtx 780 ti and then an additional hdmi cable for audio. Its just i have a rather expensive amplifier that has only 2 rca, spdif and hdmi as input so hdmi is really the only viable option for full surround sound as my sound card doesn't support dts or dolby live...thats creative for ya.

I currently have a radeon 5870 but the hdmi doesn't seem to work for audio at least with 3 monitors running off of it so really wanna see if more advanced cards didn't have this problem.

Otherwise if anyone has an option to connect 6 channel audio (5.1) from a creative titanium fatality champion series to the inputs up above it would be great....Don't really want to go have to buy another sound card as the only hdmi card is $230.

Well, I would recommend trying just 2 screens for the time being(Display Port and DVI) and see if you get surround sound or not.

When you say it came in surround sound over all speakers do you mean it just played the same thing front and rear or just played 2 channels. If something was made with 2 channels only, it may get auto upmixed like that by the card or even the amp. The sound card(Audigy and X-fi) calls it CMSS Stereo Surround(mirror front to rear and create a center channel).

It may be worth checking to see if the amp happens to have an option that may be causing this.
If that is the PCI-e version of the titanium, it should support Dolby Digital Live(Optical Out supports stereo SPDIF out, multichannel out via Dolby Digital Live, and pass through of multichannel DVD sound). The cards should have optical out that can do this for you. Now coaxial SPDIF would need some kind of adapter.

Now if that does not work and they mislabeled it, I think many times people use a HDMI splitter to take the audio out of the HDMI and send it to a stereo. Please note that even with video card sound, stereo sound(CD and most mp3) will just play in stereo.

You will also have to set the default playback device under control panel - > Hardware and Sound -> Sound -> Playback

You may also be able to find a HDMI adapter that takes the audio and redirects it to another location.

ive tried downloading the DD live but when installing it has told me it was not compatible even with it being listed on the site.. Dont know if thats their mistake or what.

I tried the splitter as had one lying around but it came out in stereo sound over all the speakers however i want actual surround rather than all the left speakers playing one sound and the right another.

Also have tried setting playback under different devices and my graphics card can not even recognise i have even plugged anything in. I think because i am already 2 monitors and then a third off the display port i am unable to use the hdmi slot. Will maybe test that in the morning but so far im about to throw it through a wall..

Other option i have is buy another receiver that has analog inputs then either converters for the 3.5 to RCA or just get another sound card with it. Rather not do that though as have spent around $600 combined on my current ones...silly me

Anyway thanks for the ideas :)

Yeah i will give that a go in the morning, as im a bit peeved off with it atm.

What i mean it is only 2 channels so the front and rear left side played one channel and the front and rear right speakers did the same for the other channel. I don't have the center one plugged in as of yet but as i said before because i cant install DD live or DTS i cant seem to be able to do much else. Thats the main reason i was asking about the graphics card. I know the audio would suck compared to a fully fledged sound card but its better than nothing.

Post back if you have any luck with the sound card audio.

Seeing as the sound card is only sending 2 channel audio, the amp must be doing this upmixing.

One important thing to not about many higher end sound cards. A good portion of that cost goes into the analog side of things. The DAC/Opamps/Heaphone amp/Signal caps[block any DC]/Ect are all for the analog side. Digital bypasses this section of the card.

Extras like CMSS/DDL. ect are done in software on newer OSes for the most part. That said, if you are getting an exact digital copy with no EQ and other stuff, the video cards sound should sound as good as the dedicated sound card.

At that point, you rely on the DAC/Opamps and other parts within the amp it self.

Also the parts that creative uses on that card are not high end as such. The opamps(4558 series) have been around forever and used on 1000s of cd players all the way back to the 80s if not older. Not that these are BAD parts, just not what "audiophiles" would pick. Then again when it comes to computer speakers most of them use the same types of opamps so placing better ones on the sound card may not help.
