(also see list of parts below in comments)

Please comment and advise. This is my first build. After searching the box warehouse stores and the likes of amazon, dell, and Newegg, there didnt seem to be a system that was ideally suited for what my "hybrid" needs.

System will be used predominantly for business. I am a publisher and writer, frequently viewing/manipulating large graphic files. I am also regularly editing HD film (demo clips, short movies, etc) for my actress daughter. Because we are still in the dark ages, using computers from my old company (dell optiplexes with xp pro and office 2003 and 2gb ram and pentium4 processors), anything we upgrade to will feel like a billion percent improvement.

I am absolutely sure that my parts list is beyond overboard as I simply went through and chose everything that I had been wanting to find in a pre-built system ----AND---- wanted to future proof myself as much as possible. (Our existing computers literally are not upgradable due to the 32bit MB limitations).

I originally had hoped to build/find a laptop that could be as strong as my envisioned PC in the $1,000---$1,500 range. However, a big-box computer guy indicated that nearly all laptops are virtually impossible to "future proof" and by nature are on the way to being obsolete as soon as walk out the door with them. My first choice would be a strong laptop, though. So, I would appreciate your thoughts and experience with this concept.

As you can tell, I have researched and analyzed and like so many of you came to the conclusion that I can build better for less--except in the laptop world.

Note: I will be buying two or three of these systems and/or a laptop and one or two of these systems to replace all old, out-dated, brutally slow and glitchy computers in our home. SO, it is very important to find ways to get the costs down. I can't begin to spend $10,000 on computers.

** IF money were no object, is there any reason why a new PC or Laptop couldn't have *only* SSD (i.e. Samsung Evo or Pro 1tb)?

THANKS AGAIN!

If your apps are truly multicore enabled, a 6 core 5820K is appropriate.
But, I can't help but think that a less expensive i7-4790K with faster cores might be generally more capable.
Any Z97 based motherboard will do the job at 1/3 the price.

At stock the i7-4790K will turbo to 4.4. The 6 and 8 core chips must run at lower clocks to meet thermal guidelines.

You can use a less expensive 16gb kit of 2 x 8gb 1866 DDR3.

No liquid cooling would be needed. A simple $30 tower type air cooler with a 120mm fan would do the job.
They all come with adequate thermal paste.

I will never again build without using a SSD for the OS.
It just makes everything you do so much quicker.
A one hour widows update will take 15 minutes.

I like Samsung EVO for the ssd. A 240gb ssd would be appropriate.

If your editing apps can use CUDA, then prefer a Nvidia card. If you are not gaming, a GTX750 would be plenty.

Coolermaster is not known for quality. Prefer Seasonic or at least a tier 2 unit.

600-650w is plenty to allow for even the strongest of graphics cards.
