Hi, I bought a laptop last year, its a HP Pavilion DV7 core i72630qm with 6gb of Ram and a mobility radeon hd5000. Currently using win7

I mainly used it for web development and web surfing, but from 4-5 months ago it lags in everything I do. Sometimes its really annoying because it lags only when doing basic stuff, for example im working in excel and click a button, it waits 2-3 seconds then respond, or select a cell and the same 2-3 seconds just to change the selection.

I am not sure what could be causing this problem, so I made some basic research and already try this:

- Defrag the disc
- Run memtest, no problems showed up
- Check virus and spyware. (with AVG and Spybot search and destroy)
- Run hdd regenerator, no problems shown
- Drivers update

I also installed ubuntu and the problem shows up there too, havent try too much but it also lags when clicking something or writing and url in the browser.

Any ideas what could be happening and how to fix it or at least detect whats the problem.

Thanks in advance.

PD hope the category i choose is the right one.

Yes, exactly! Your hard drive is damaged. Backup all your data right now and purchase a new drive. I've had this experience many times. Download and run HDDscan and post the results here.

Anyway, reallocated sectors are a sure indicator of a failing hard drive.

Thanks for your answer, but no, cpu usage is low about 5% or less, also ram usage is about 40% or less. And those lag spikes occur.

Could it be that programs dont get loaded on RAM and they lag because they keep loading from the disk? I am wondering because it's like the lag occurs on proccess that are not called for a while or have not been used. For example the first time I click the task bar, or right click on the desktop.

I've run some disk diagnostics tools. They say the hdd has 91 reallocated sector count... what does it mean? Could it be the cause of the laggy/unresponsive laptop? Could a bad partition be the cause?
