hp laptop works only on external monitor

I have a HP pavilion g4-1015dx notebook pc. It powers on but nothing on the screen. If I connect using a vga cable to a dell monitor the notebook works. Is this a motherboard issue? Any suggestions on how to fix this? thanks in advance!

There could be an issue anywhere from the ribbon cable to the inverter or any other component of the laptop screen. A competent repair tech might be able to troubleshoot it and quote for a repair.
