windows 7 64 bit. Computer will randomly freeze, usually when browsing but its happened during a gaming session too. Before it would simply freeze the image of whatever was happening at the time. Now its been freezing to a blank light blue screen. No alt tab, no control alt delete, nothing does anything except the power button.

No idea what triggers it but its been increasing in frequency. Have minidumps enabled but they don't get written. Event log shows nothing unusual that I can see. Quick harddrive chkdsk didn't show anything. A longer chkdsk was run but by the time I got back the computer had restarted back to desktop so I assume it ran its course. Windows memory test showed nothing. Quick Memtest shows nothing. Tried updating geforce to latest drivers to no avail.

Solution
most often you see this type of problem due to a device driver being deadlocked. That is one piece of code is waiting for another piece of code to finish but it does not finish because it is waiting for the first piece of code to finish. Windows does not bugcheck because code is actually running (waiting)

generally, I see two common direct causes of this. Graphics drivers and some older SSD drives with firmware bugs.

So, as a guess: update your graphics driver directly from the vendor, and go to the windows control panel, find device manager and disable any high definition sound devices that you don't have speakers connected to. Particularly any in your graphics card if you don't have speakers in your monitor.

if you have a SSD, you might want to: Update firmware, make sure you have plenty of free space on the drive, boot into BIOS and leave it there for several hours to allow the drive to run internal cleanup routines. Then reboot and see if the system is better.

if all of these fail, you have to run verifier.exe and set some global debugging flags such as deadlock detection and force windows to bugcheck on any bad driver. This will name the driver that is causing the problem.
