For a long time I've been wanting to make a pc that is capable to run programs such as Auto cad and play games like battlefield 4 at ultra settings.today an old man gave me his dell precision 690 which is still running on windows xp.I was wondering if it is possible and practical to upgrade this pc .I'm also very new to custom pc building ,I don't know what parts are best and why .I would really appreciate it if some one could help me decide weather to upgrade this pc or instead just save up money for a brand new pc.

It would be a bit difficult to upgrade that for gaming usage. For one thing, it can definitely support any modern-day graphics card of your choice, but the power supply unit is definitely not powerful enough to supply power to a modern day one, so a new PSU would be needed. A PSU can be about $50 and a graphics card about $150 for a good one.

Anyways, you need to tell us the exact specs of yours because it looks like they vary and are customizable.

That Precision 690 includes Xeon CPUs that are 8 years old and still runs DDR2 memory. You are better off saving for a new PC.
