Hi,

I had some problems when I took out my old graphics card (GT-620) and replaced it with the R9 270X. The size of the card meant I had to bend the case a little to get it in, but it is really a tight fit in the case and on the mobo. The connections that run from the mobo to the hard-drive and optical drive are pressed against the board, and the connections from the 750W PSU that go into the video card had to be squeezed in.

Every now and then the system will freeze. This happened with Skyrim and when i was watching a movie at full screen. The screen will go a pixelated block of color similar to what I was seeing at the time. CTR-ALT-DEL does not work and I have to reset my system. It does not happen all the time but enough to concern me. Also, when I look back at a video I have recorded with Bandicam, I get occasionally stutters and pixelation that I did not see whilst playing.

I am wondering if I should just get a roomier case and mobo or have I actually damaged something in some way. 90% of the time things work okay.

I have recently added Win 8.1.
3nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3770 Processor (3.4 GHZ)
2x4GB DDR3

Cheers

Please get a new case now, or cut a hole in your current case so that nothing is pressing against anything inside your computer.

Heat may also be a factor in these errors, a bigger case will solve that. Essentially based on your description your GPU is shutting down without warning (pixelation is sort of a warning). Hopefully you haven't damaged the card, but you wont know until you put the card in an environment that it can function properly in. Good luck.

Corrupt display can be one of four things:
1- driver bug or corruption
2- defective GPU
3- overheating GPU or GPU memory
4- bad power

Check your temperatures and tell us what your PSU model actually is - not all 750W PSUs are created equal. PSU age may also be a factor.

run without the side panel on, its not going to hurt it. With a fan blowing inside. until you can get a new case.

I run speed fan and nothing gets hotter than 60C.
PSU is a brand new EVGA SUPERNOVA NEX750B 80 PLUS BRONZE 750W.
Drivers are all updated, unintalled, and reinstalled.

I have taped things out of the way but the plastic connections from the mobo to the harddrives have no option but to touch the card. Should I look at a roomier mobo?

Thanks for the responses so far.

EDIT: I think a case seems to be agreed upon, so I am ordering a NZXT PHANTOM 530 FULL TOWER FITS EXTENDED ATX.

With no obvious suspect to start with, I would go with something along Beezy's suggestion: take a side-panel off, make a desk/floor fan blow directly into it at close range with as many airflow obstructions cleared out and see if you still get display corruption.

If increased airflow through the case fixes it, it is very likely something that is not reporting temperatures is overheating in a ventilation dead-spot and in that case, getting a less cramped case may very well fix your problem.

So keep the same mobo at the moment or upgrade that as well while I am ordering a case?
