Video Card overheating within seconds opening up any computer game.

I have an ADM Radeon 6850 and recently it started to act up. When running any game, within seconds, its temperature will spike to 100-105 c and stay there. The card's fan will also spike with the increased temperature also within a few seconds and hit 100% speed as well. If I minimize the game, again within a few seconds, the temperature will drop down to around 50 c and the fan speed around 50% as well. I can repeat this process over and over and get the same results. And this works for any game, even running light games like league of legends will cause the same thing to happen.

I have the drivers fully updated, and I have run multiple scans for any sort of bitcoin miner malware. I've had this setup for nearly 3 years with no problems until recently, so its not some sort of hardware compatibility issue.

Anyone have any ideas as to what it might be?

Is it a reference style blower like this 6850?

Theres lines of fins that run down the heatsink, similar to the bottom part here that dust looooves to get clogged in,and that blocks all the airflow.

So if it is,you should take the plastic shielding off and run a Q-Tip or something similar through it.

I cleaned it out a few weeks ago with a can of compressed air. While it did have dust build up when I cleaned it, its fine now. Whats throwing me off is how fast it will spike up and then drop back down. I don't have a lot of knowledge in this area but is that normal? For it to be able to spike from 50 c to 100 c, then drop back down to 50 c in the matter of 8-10 seconds?

hmm, my card cools down quite fast buit it doesnt build up heat as fast as yours. I personaly have no experience with a radeon 6850 so I have no idea what the cooling is supposed to be like.

did you change anything in your case before this problem started?

I do have 2 slots for video cards, I did attempt to move slots to increase the distance between my sound card and video card to reduce hum in my wireless headset. For some reason I couldn't get it to recognize the card in the 2nd slot so I put it back and then tried making a shield out of foil, cardboard, and tape which didn't seem to do much. I just deal with the hum now.

It's tough for me to pinpoint exactly when this started because I usually put on my headset and log into vent prior to opening any games. Been playing league for a long time now but I decided to open up Diablo 3 and that's when I noticed something was up. The game was super choppy, even on the lowest settings. So I started poking around and noticed my video card temp was way up, took off my headset and heard the fan running wide open. That was yesterday.

you tried to make a shield using alumium foil? that's not the best idea...
anyway, are you still using that? maybe something came loose and blew into your graphics card. i'm a bit lost here with what the problem could be though,

No I'm not using that anymore, I pulled it out within a minute because it wasn't reducing the hum at all. I'm trying to at least narrow down the problem. It's an older card so I don't mind replacing it. But if its something else I'd hate to drop ~200 bucks on a new graphics card when that's not the issue.

Interesting idea, perhaps I blew some dust somewhere where it didn't need to go. I've never removed the plastic shield, and I'll admit I'm not sure exactly how to do that (although I'm sure I could try and figure it out).

As for the type, here is the one I have.

Also, thanks for your help so far tsuneo6. I do appreciate it :)

Not exactly the same, but the same thing can happen.

As for removing the shroud,im not familiar with that exact card but it cant be very different.

4 or 5 screws on the bottom of the plate and the lift the shroud up from the back of the card(opposite from the VGA/DVI/HMDI ports). Just like nearly every other PC component,it doesnt take much effort if done right. If it seems like the plastic is bending in your grasp you should look closer for plastic clips or something retaining it.

Also dont forget to unhook the fan from the GPU board and plug it back in when done!
